Broadcasting Commission Calls for a Second Time to Submit Names for the Broadcast Advisory Committee Elections

Maldives Broadcasting Commission has called for commercial TV and Radio stations to submit names for the Broadcast Advisory Committee, BAC elections. The BAC is mandated to advice the Broadcasting Commission on matters related to broadcasting in Maldives.

The “Broadcast Advisory Committee” constituted under the 2011 – 2015 Strategic Action Plan of the Commission advices the Commission on formulating regulations, policies and procedures related to broadcasting. In addition the Committee is responsible to assist and aid the Commission in developing the broadcast industry and discuss broadcast industry related issues and bring it to the attention of the Commission.

The BAC consists of total 17 members, 3 members representing commercial TV channels, 2 representing commercial radio channels, 1 member representing public service broadcaster, 1 member representing a nationwide rebroadcaster and 1 member who provides rebroadcast service to specific regions of Maldives.

In addition to the above members the BAC consist of Stakeholder representation from the Maldives Media Council, Maldives Police Service, Local Government Authority, Communication Authority of Maldives, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, National Bureau of Classification, and Ministry of Islamic Affairs. The committee also consists of an expert from broadcast field and a representation from civil society.

Commission did not receive adequate number of nominations on the first round from commercial broadcasters. The new deadline for submission of nomination from broadcasters is 24th February 2013 at 14:00 hrs. Application forms to submit nominations have been sent to all licensed Channels.

The date for the BAC Elections to appoint Commercial broadcasters will be announced when all nominations are processed.
