The Maldives Broadcasting Commission today met the candidate chosen by the Saudi Government to cover this year’s Hajj event. The candidate chosen for this year’s Hajj trip was VTV’s Director of Radio, Ahmed Rameez.
In the meeting held this afternoon at the Maldives Broadcasting Commission President of the Commission Mohamed Shahyb congratulated Ahmed Rameez and said that this is a significant moment for Commercial broadcasters since their inception in 2007. He also said that this is the first time for a commercial broadcaster to get an opportunity like this and he wishes in the future the people working in commercial broadcasting will get more opportunities like this.
On 10th September Ministry of Islamic Affairs has requested Maldives Broadcasting Commission to select a broadcaster a broadcaster for the Hajj trip offered by the Saudi government to cover the Hajj event via Radio and Television. The role of this selection was given to the Commission in response to the Commission’s request. In the past years, the Hajj trip was given to the state broadcaster even though commercial broadcasters began operating from 2007 onwards. Being the regulator of broadcasters, the Commission decided to give equal opportunity to all broadcasters in a fair and equitable manner.
In today’s meeting President Mohamed Shahyb, Vice President Abdulla Shujau, Commissioner Moomina Adam and Secretary General Noora Ali participated.
Three Channels were shortlisted for the Hajj draw held on 12 September 2012. From a total of 14 channels that participated in this draw, Raaje TV, VTV and Dhivehi Raajeyge Adu got selected to submit CV’s of nominating candidates. Upon the submission of a candidate’s CV from the shortlisted channels the final selection was made by the Government of Saudi Arabia.
According to the selection criteria set by the Saudi government, the eligible person need to be an experienced male broadcast journalist who has not performed Hajj before.
