August 29, 2012

Maldives Broadcasting Commission has advised all the broadcasters not to act in any way that may incite violence in the wake of the Commission of National Inquiry releasing its report tomorrow. The Commission further called upon national security forces not to act in way that would limit the freedom of expression and freedom of media which is guaranteed by the constitution.

Following is the text from circular sent to all broadcasting organizations, Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force.

Following the release of its report by the Commission of National Inquiry on 30 August 2012, if the political situation deteriorates resulting in the disruption of peace, we advise all broadcasters to avoid any reporting that would create incitement and disrupt harmony. Also Broadcasters are to comply with the code of practice enacted by the thirty seventh clause of the Broadcasting Act.  Action will be taken according to the rules and regulations on broadcasters who fail to comply.

At the same time we advise broadcasters who are covering protests and others political activities not to hinder the work of security forces who are doing their jobs. Also we call upon security forces to give equal opportunity to all broadcasters to cover protests and other political activities and not to act in way that limits the freedom of expression and freedom of media which is guaranteed by the Constitution.
