The Maldives Broadcasting Commission (hereinafter “the Commission”) hereby issues the following statement regarding its recent actions against Channel -13 and the press statement issued by the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA):
The Commission, acting within its legal mandate under Law No. 16/2010 (Broadcasting Act), investigated a content aired on Channel -13’s program “Iraadhaan Khabaruge Bodu Report” broadcasted on January 30, 2025. The content was determined to be in violation of the referenced law as well as the specified principles set forth in the Broadcasting Code of Practice.
Pursuant to the Broadcasting Act, the Commission is routinely responsible to independently examining broadcasts and enforcing regulatory measures where the content breaches the Code of Practice. Such actions are vital for maintaining the integrity and standards of broadcasting in the Maldives.
The Commission identified violations of the third principle (1), fifth principle (1), and fifth principle (4) of the Broadcasting Code of Practice in the mentioned broadcast. In accordance with Article 44(a)(3) of the Broadcasting Act, the Commission directed Channel – 13 to unconditionally broadcast an apology statement between 20:00-21:00, prior to August 19, 2025.
Under Article 44(c) of the Broadcasting Act, if a broadcast licensee constantly violates the laws and fails to comply with instructions, the Commission holds authority to impose a temporary suspension of broadcasting schedule. As a result of Channel – 13’s continued non-compliance and repeated violations, the Commission, on July 6, 2025, decided a suspension of Channel – 13’s program from 20:00-21:00 for one night.
Channel -13 was formally notified on August 11, 2025, with precise instructions to suspend broadcasting on August 21, 2025. Despite this, Channel -13 neither responded to the notification nor complied with the suspension order.
The Commission notes with concern Channel – 13’s repeated claims of not receiving official documentation and notifications. Senior management of Channel – 13, when contacted on August 21, 2025, confirmed receipt had not been acknowledged and proceeded in violation of the suspension directive.
Following Channel – 13’s violation of the suspension order, the Commission issued a public statement via social media platforms regarding forthcoming legal actions. Subsequent inquiries were made by the media and the Maldives Journalists Association.
The Commission regrets to note that the MJA, despite awareness of the factual details, released a press statement that distorts the Commission’s reputation and misleads public perception concerning its independence and impartiality. The Commission strongly condemns this approach, emphasizing that the MJA should uphold honest, independent, and responsible journalism, free from bias and omission of critical information.
The Maldives Broadcasting Commission reaffirms its commitment to operate as a fully independent, impartial regulatory body, guided by international best practices and dedicated to safeguarding the Maldivian broadcasting sector and the public interest. The Commission maintains robust relationships with numerous regional and global media organizations to uphold these standards.
The Commission calls upon all stakeholders, including the media organizations and professional associations, to actively uphold and promote constructive, transparent, and equitable practices within the Maldives broadcasting sector.
